Most falls on commercial properties happen at a change in level. A single step at a clubhouse door, stairs down to a pool deck, a raised patio edge, a ramp into a courtyard. In daylight they are obvious. After dark, they disappear, and the person who misses one is a resident, a guest or a tenant’s customer.

Green Image installs and repairs step and deck lighting for associations, condos, office parks and retail centers across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade. These are small, recessed fixtures set into risers, walls and deck surfaces to mark exactly where the level changes.

Step and Deck Lighting for Pools, Clubhouses and Amenities

Stair and Amenity Deck Lighting for Safety

Stair and amenity deck lighting for safety is about putting light on the tread, not on the surrounding area. The fixtures are low and shielded so they do not glare into the eyes of someone walking down. Typical locations:

  • Stair risers and side walls: one fixture per step or every other step, depending on width.
  • Pool deck edges and raised decks: fixtures that outline the edge.
  • Clubhouse and building entries: single steps and landings at doors.
  • Ramps and transitions: where a walkway changes slope.
  • Outdoor kitchens and gathering areas: steps up to raised seating.

Retrofit or New Construction

The best time to add step lights is during construction or a deck renovation, when fixtures can be built into the surface or wall. Many properties need them added later. For an existing stair or wall, we look at where wire can be routed and whether surface mounted fixtures make more sense than cutting in. If cutting into concrete or masonry is needed, that part of the work goes through licensed subcontractors and is listed separately.

Green Image also works as a landscape and lighting subcontractor for general contractors building or renovating amenity areas, so fixtures can go in at the right stage.

What Goes Wrong With Step Lights

  1. Water intrusion: fixtures in pool decks and low spots fill with water if not sealed and drained.
  2. Lens damage: chairs, carts and cleaning equipment scratch or crack lenses.
  3. Dirt and debris: recessed fixtures fill with sand and leaves.
  4. Control settings: safety lights on a timer that shuts off too early.

Step lights should run dusk to dawn on a photocell, separate from accent lighting. We set them up that way and list every fixture by location so repairs are easy to track. For the full system see our commercial landscape lighting page, and for patio surfaces see paver patios.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can step lights be added to existing concrete stairs?

Often, yes. Depending on the stair, fixtures can be recessed into a side wall, surface mounted, or cut into the riser. Cutting into concrete is done through licensed subcontractors and listed separately.

For safety, yes. We recommend step and deck lights run dusk to dawn on a photocell, on a separate zone from accent lighting that can shut off earlier.

Low voltage fixtures rated for wet locations are used around pool decks. Placement near the pool itself follows the applicable electrical requirements, and any line voltage work goes through licensed subcontractors.

Service visits include cleaning debris out of fixtures, checking lenses and seals, and testing each fixture. Damaged lenses are listed by location and replaced.
